Base make-up is quite literally the “foundation” of a great make-over. It can even out the complexion and offer a soft, natural glow. Select from light liquid and creamy stick varieties, which blend more easily over delicate skin than quick-setting or ultra-matte versions. Moisturizing foundations offer extra aid for dry skin. For natural, almost transparent coverage, select a sheer, oil-free foundation or tinted moisturizer.

Foundation should match your normal skin tone. If you feel especially pale or sallow, the right foundation can bring back a healthy look. However, you aren’t adding color: so don’t select a base that’s too pink or orange for you. It’s much better to choose your most natural skin-tone shade and then
provide color with blush, shadows and lipstick. A beauty professional can help you match your shade. Of course, cosmetologists at a LGFB group program can help, too.

The best approach for even coverage: dot your base make-up on forehead, cheeks, chin and nose and gently smooth over skin with a wedge sponge or clean fingers. Be gentle on spots you have concealed, blending rather than wiping. Smooth out color at the jaw and hairline to avoid a mask look. (If your shade is well-chosen, it should blend naturally, without any obvious base border.) Once you have smoothed foundation over the entire face, you may touch up concealer, if needed.

Finally, a light application of translucent or lightly hued loose powder with a cotton ball will set your foundation and help control late-day shine. Compressed powder compacts work well for touchups. However, if skin is very dry or flaky, you may prefer to skip powder.
