What is Look Good. . .Feel Better® (LGFB)?
Look Good. . .Feel Better® is a free, non-medical, brand-neutral national public service program created from the concept that if someone with cancer can be helped to look good, their improved self-esteem will help them to approach their disease and treatment with greater confidence. LGFB offers suggestions and advice to cope with the appearance side effects of treatment through group programs offered nationwide, self-help materials, Web sites, and brochures.
 
What are LGFB group programs?
LGFB group programs consist of a two-hour, hands-on workshop with a volunteer certified cosmetologist which includes a 12-step skin care/make-up application lesson, demonstration of options for dealing with hair loss, including wigs, scarves and accessories, and nail care techniques. Attendees also use and take home complimentary cosmetic kits in their appropriate skin tones (light, medium, dark, extra dark) with helpful instruction booklets.
 
Who can attend LGFB group programs?

The group program is open to all women living with cancer who are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy treatment. Each year, more than 50,000 women participate in a Look Good...Feel Better group session. Since 1989, over 500,000 cancer patients have benefited from the program.

 
Where can I find a LGFB group program?

Look Good...Feel Better group programs are available in every state, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Group programs are held in comprehensive cancer centers, local hospitals, ACS offices and other community settings. To find a LGFB group program in your area, please visit the “Program Finder” on www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org, call 800-395-LOOK, or contact your local American Cancer Society office.

Look Good...Feel Better is also offered in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Singapore and the United Kingdom. How many LGFB group programs are offered in the U.S.?

There are approximately 7,500 group programs offered nationwide in 1,800 locations including, comprehensive cancer centers, local hospitals, ACS offices and other community settings.

 
What if there is not a LGFB group program in my area or I don’t feel well enough to attend a program?

For those women unable to attend a group program, a free self-help video and step-by-step instruction booklet are available; to order call 800-395-LOOK. Help, including the self-help video, is also available on the Web at: www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org.

 
Is LGFB offered in Spanish?
All collateral materials for Look Good…Feel Better programs are available nationwide in Spanish upon request. Luzca Bien...Siéntase Mejor®, the Look Good...Feel Better bilingual program, is currently available throughout the United States either as dedicated Spanish-language sessions, or as bilingual patient sessions.
 
Does LGFB only offer programs for women?

In addition to the women’s program, LGFB offers Look Good. . .Feel Better for Teens® and Look Good. . .Feel Better for Men.

 
What is Look Good. . .Feel Better for Teens?

Look Good. . .Feel Better for Teens is a group program for adolescents aged 13-to-17, providing information on dealing with the appearance and sociological side effects related to cancer and its treatment. Group programs are available in 18 locations across the country. Materials have been created exclusively for teenagers and all program leaders receive specialized training to address physical, social and psychological issues relevant to adolescents. To find out if there is a program near you, contact your local ACS office or call 800-395-LOOK.

A Web site, www.2bMe.org, is an additional resource for teens with cancer. The site addresses appearance-related issues, health matters and concerns about peer relationships.

 
What is Look Good. . .Feel Better for Men?

Look Good. . .Feel Better for Men offers a brochure, is available for men undergoing cancer treatment. This brochure is designed as a “self-help” piece and provides useful information on the appearance-related side effects of treatment, as well as other information that is useful during this challenging time. The Look Good. . .Feel Better for Men brochure is available through the ACS, by calling 800-395-LOOK, as well as through select cancer support centers nationwide. You may also find the brochure on the Web at: www.lookgoodfeelbetterformen.org.

 
Who can volunteer for LGFB?

Thousands of volunteer cosmetologists participate in the program. All are trained and certified by ACS, NCA and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation at local, state and national certification workshops. In addition, some volunteer health care professionals and other individuals also give their time to Look Good...Feel Better. If you are interested in becoming a LGFB volunteer, contact your local ACS office or call 800-395-LOOK.

 
How many volunteers does LGFB have?

Nearly 12,000 volunteers, both cosmetologists and health care professionals, give over 100,000 hours of service each year to the LGFB program.

 
How long has LGFB existed?

LGFB was founded and developed in 1989 by the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, a charitable organization established by the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the cosmetics industry.

 
Who sponsors LGFB?

The program is offered through a collaboration between the Personal Care Products Council Foundation , the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA).

The ACS administers the program nationwide, NCA enlists its members to participate as Look Good...Feel Better volunteer cosmetologists and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation provides the makeup, materials, and financial support for the program. Each year, the cosmetics industry donates nearly one million pieces of cosmetics, valued at approximately $10 million.

The three sponsoring organizations work together to provide:

  • Patient education, through group or individual sessions, or through self-help materials;
  • Free program materials including videos and pamphlets;
  • Free makeup kits for each patient participating in a group program
 
What is the Personal Care Products Council Foundation?

The Personal Care Products Council Foundation is a charitable organization established by the Personal Care Products Council, which is the national representative of the cosmetics and personal care products industry and provides services to the association’s 600 members. The Personal Care Products Council Foundation provides the program oversight, makeup, materials, and financial support to implement Look Good. . .Feel Better’s many services.

 
What is the American Cancer Society (ACS)?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. The ACS administers Look Good. . .Feel Better programs nationwide. For more information about the ACS, visit www.cancer.org.

 
What is the National Cosmetology Association (NCA)?

The National Cosmetology Association (NCA) is a national organization of more than 25,000 hairstylists, wig experts, estheticians, makeup artists and nail technicians. The NCA enlists its members to participate as Look Good. . .Feel Better volunteer cosmetologists. For more information about the NCA, visit www.salonprofessionals.org.
