Look Good…Feel Better® Launches
Program for Men
Washington, D.C. – After 15 years
of successfully serving women, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation has launched
an initiative to help men. Look Good...Feel Better for MenK is
a 10 page brochure that provides information on how to combat
appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment to look and
feel confident and in control. Also featured is a tear-out guide, “The
Daily Routine”, which reviews basic steps for good skin
care and ways to camouflage hair loss.
An estimated 675,300 men
are diagnosed with cancer each year, and there is a one in
two chance that a man will develop cancer during
his lifetime. Most of these men will go through some combination
of chemotherapy and radiation, and will suffer side-effects such
as loss of hair, eyebrows and facial hair, and discoloration
of skin. Created with the help of medical professionals, cancer
patients,
and beauty professionals, the new Look Good...Feel
Better for MenK brochure helps to fill an important gap in support for men
going
through cancer treatment.
“Coping with the physical side-effects of cancer treatment is difficult
for many cancer patients - and men are no exception,” said
Dr. David McLeod, Director of Urologic Oncology at Walter Reed
Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, and member of the Medical
Advisory Board of Us Too!, a national support group for men with
prostate cancer. “Men have their own concerns about the
changes they see regarding skin dryness, hair loss, stress, and
low energy
as a result of chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapies.
I feel that this brochure provides very useful and practical
information to help men deal with the appearance-related side
effects, and
return to the business of living their lives and feeling confident.”
"While we have had great success over the
past 15 years serving the needs of women cancer patients, it
has been a challenge
to find a way to reach men who are in cancer treatment to provide
them with good and useful information. I think this brochure
will meet this challenge and hopefully help men better cope with the
side effects of cancer," says Carolyn Deaver, vice president
of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the Look Good...Feel Better program.
The
brochure, which was underwritten by The Gillette Company,
is available through the American Cancer Society or by
