By encouraging your friend or family member to
attend a Look Good…Feel Better group program, you help promote
an important tool for coping. A recent study showed that only a
small percentage of female patients knew about or attended any type
of support program. Instead, patients said they relied on the advice
of family and friends to deal with these concerns. So what can you
do for a woman close to you who is experiencing the appearance-related
side effects of cancer?
- Learn more about cancer and its physical and
psychological effects. Build insight.
Contact your local American
Cancer Society for more information.
- Explore this Web site and share
it.
- Reinforce that she deserves pampering now.
(Some women may feel it’s indulgent to think about looks
during treatment, but remind her that it will give her outlook
a lift, too.)
- Offer to drive her to a LGFB group
program or one-on-one consultation. At the group programs,
women receive hands-on make-over tips and advice to Look Good…Feel
Better — plus a free, top-brand skincare/make-up kit.
- If no group program is currently offered locally,
call 1-800-395-LOOK to request the LGFB self-help video/booklet.
- Offer to provide a second opinion in picking
out wigs, hats and headwraps, if desired, or even help with shopping.
- Support LGFB by purchasing an Oscar
de la Renta silk scarf for yourself or a loved one.
